Cairo is the capital of Egypt, with a population of about 7.8 million people. It is the largest metropolis in the Middle East and Africa and the 11th largest in the world. Cairo is located in the northern part of the country, also called Lower Egypt, 165 km south of the Mediterranean Sea and 120 km west of the Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal.
The city is located on the Nile River, just south of the point where the river emerges from a deserted valley and branches into its delta. Due to the movement of the Nile, the newest parts of the city are located near the river.
The old part of the city, located south of the new center, includes the remains of Fustat and the old Coptic quarter. The Bulak region to the north originated in the 16th century as a port and is today Cairo's main industrial area. The citadel, built by the Fatimids after the founding of Cairo, is located east of the center, surrounded by the old Muslim quarter.
The western part of Cairo is dominated by wide boulevards, open spaces and modern architecture with European influence, and the eastern half of the city is characterized by narrow streets, crowded homes and Islamic architecture.
