Sohag, Egypt
130 km south of Asyut is another picturesque agricultural town in Central Egypt, where the large Christian community is so hospitable and kind that one does not leave from there, Sohag owes its fame to the most revered Egyptian monasteries and textile its a factory producing the finest fabrics of Egypt using technology inherited from the time of the pharaohs.
These pearls, which bring fame for Sohag, are located 10 km outside the city. They may not be comparable to the monasteries of Asyut, but they have the ability to arouse many more emotions and feelings in visitors.
For example, the White Monastery, built of limestone, looks strikingly like an Egyptian temple. In the days of its greatest glory, the monastery was home to over 2,000 monks. In addition, this monastery in Sohag, every year around July 14, gathers over thousands of pilgrims who have flocked to this place to celebrate the feast of Shenouda - a saint of the V century, founder of the White Monastery.
Near it rises the Red Monastery, perhaps owing its name to the red bricks from which it was built. And around its creator is an interesting story - St. Bishoy was a repentant robber, a follower of St. Shenouda.
Today, the doors of the White Monastery are open not only for visitors and pilgrims, but also for young people who have come to receive a Christian education in the Coptic monastery.
