Reichenbach Falls, Switzerland
The Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland consists of five parts that have a total height of 250 m, and the upper part of the waterfall has one of the largest single falls in the Alps. The lower part of the Reichenbach Falls is not far from the village of Meiringen. There is a ropeway to the upper falls. There are separate trails from which you can best see the impressive waterfall and the beautiful Hazli Valley.
The Reichenbach Falls is also famous for the place it occupies in literature. On a small wooden bridge there is a white star marking the spot where Sherlock Holmes and Prof. Moriarty cling to each other before falling into the "cauldron of water" below them, described by Conan Doyle in The Last Case. Sherlock Holmes is commemorated here every year on 4 May.
