Villa Farnesina is one of Rome's famous Renaissance landmarks. It was the suburban residence of the wealthy Roman banker Agostino Chigi and was built between 1508 and 1511 by Baldassare Peruzzi. The painting of the villa Chigi commissioned to the great artist Raphael, with whom he was friends. The Italian banker was also his patron. In 1515, Raphael painted the main hall of the villa - this is the famous fresco "Triumph of Galatea", which connoisseurs of painting claim to be one of the most brilliant works of art ever created by Raphael.
In Villa Farnesina, the great artist and his skilled student painted the ceiling of the gallery, recreating the story of Cupid and Psyche. Murals in other rooms of the house were painted by Baldassare Peruzzi and Sodom. After the death of Agostino Chigi, his villa was acquired by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, after whom it is named.
