Down House, England
Down House is a home closely associated with Charles Darwin's name. This is his carefully maintained home where he once conducted important scientific experiments.
Charles and Emma Darwin have lived in Down House for over 40 years. Here he wrote his work "Origin of Species. His desk and chair, as well as many of his family effects, are still preserved and can be seen in his study at Down House. A Down House legend says that his ghost still haunts the places where he used to walk.
Darwin moved to live in Downey Village for his health. He described the 18th-century Down House as an ugly house with an uninviting garden. He died at Down House aged 73 in 1881 and was interred in Westminster Abbey.
Down House was opened to visitors in 1929. Great care has been taken to preserve much of it as it was when Darwin lived there.
