Londonderry is an old walled city in Northern Ireland. It stretches along the picturesque curves of River Foyle. The new part of the city is called Waterside and the old part – Cityside. The fortifications around the old settlement were completed in 1618 and thus a new walled city with a citadel in the center was born. Londonderry’s historic city has remained intact over the time and kept its original layout. The four walls are still standing. Each of them has its own name as follows: Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Butcher Gate and Shipquay Gate

The old town of the city is truly fascinating and attracts many visitors. Its colorful architecture is unique combination between Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian styles. Part of the old town was destroyed by bombing and then restored. This way a few impressive modern buildings found their places in the old town too. Some of them are the Steelstown church built in 1970, Collon Bar, Craigtoun Country Park and a few others.

Once in Derry, the tourists can enjoy some or all of the city’s museum like the Workhouse Museum, the Harbour Museum, Tower Museum and Foyle Valley Railway Centre to name a few.

St Columb's Cathedral is another interesting spot in Londonderry where the original keys of the city’s gates are still kept. They were often used in the past when the legendary Apprentice Boys of Derry had to lock the gates of the city to stop the Catholic invasion in 1688.

The walls of Derry were never breached which is the reason for its nickname ‘the Maiden City’.
