One of the biggest and oldest fortresses in Europe is located in England and that would be the Dover Caste. It is in Kent, on the coast of the Pas-de-Calais strait. Dover Castle was built to protect the narrowest part of the la Manche Channel. Dover Castle was described as 'Key to England' since ancient times because of its strategic position.

Dover Castle impresses the visitors with its unique architecture. Its massive walls and huge towers still provoke images for a harsh and turbulent past, yet soaked with romance and mystery. Two concentric walls with watchtowers between them and a huge gate guarded The Great Tower in the castle.

The perfectly preserved defensive installations in the castle were used as an original setting for over twenty TV and movie productions such as ‘Hamlet’, ‘Lady Jane’ and so on.  The fortress is situated on the famous White Cliffs and evidence of fortified earthworks were found and dated before the Roman conquest of Britain. There is a network of tunnels built for military purposes in 19th century that were later used by the British army in the Dunkirk evacuation from 1940 during the Second World War.
