Tower Bridge, London

The Tower Bridge in London, in addition to everything else attributed to its greatness and importance, is also one of the five bridges on which every woman wants to be kissed.
The Tower Bridge curves over the River Thames and connects two London landmarks: the oldest - the Royal Tower, and the newest - the City Hall building, which is likened to a huge glass egg. Despite its stark Gothic appearance, Tower Bridge is no more than a century old. Tower Bridge is an iconic image known around the world. The construction of the bridge began in 1886, and the project for it was drawn up by Sir Horace Jones. The construction was completed after 8 years, and the official opening of the Tower Bridge was on June 30, 1894, by the Prince of Wales - the future King Edward VII. The neo-Gothic twin towers are clad in Cornish granite and Portland stone and the skeleton is made from more than 11,000 tonnes of Scottish steel. Two massive concrete piers with more than 70,000 tons of concrete are submerged in the water to support the structure.
The architecture of Tower Bridge is an extraordinary creation. It is a combination of a cable-stayed and a suspension bridge, 244m high, with the two towers being 65m each. The central part of the bridge is 61m long and is divided into two equal parts, which can be raised to 83 degrees by means of a hydraulic system, to to allow river traffic to pass underneath when necessary. Tower Bridge also has a pedestrian area, with the walkways themselves being 44m above the water at high tide.
It is interesting to mention that the Tower Bridge is managed by a real captain as there is shipping on the river and this process needs to be controlled. It is up to this captain and his judgment to raise the wings of the bridge at the appointed hour. The case of the American motorcade of President Bill Clinton is celebrated with extraordinary proverbiality. It hung for hours on Tower Bridge as its wings were raised to allow a pleasure craft to pass underneath.
Tower Bridge has a magical halo, which it acquired after a dangerous "cascade" in 1952. Then one of London's famous red buses failed to cross the bridge before its two parts dissolved and was forced, in the most literal sense, to jump over the chasm that opened between them. And not only does the driver pull off the maneuver successfully, but the passengers also get off without a single scratch. Since then, the bridge has been considered a place where "angels do not sleep", according to the local expression. People often come here to think about some serious problem in the hope that the angels will tell them the solution. The newlyweds believe that if they get married on the bridge, the angel will protect their marriage.
Apart from being a major tourist attraction, Tower Bridge is also a busy thoroughfare with 40,000 people passing by every day – on motorbikes, cars, bicycles and on foot.
