Bath

Bath is a city in the far north-eastern part of Somerset County in Southwest England. It is the administrative and economic center of Bath municipality and Northeast Somerset. The settlement has been developed as a spa complex around the geothermal springs in the valley of River Avon by the Romans in 1st century AD. Centuries later during the period 1720-1840 the city emerged as a popular spa resort once more. This was the time of Bath’s significant growth and the rise of the Georgian architecture preserved to this day.
Bath is one of the main tourist destinations in Great Britain for its priceless historic heritage and ancient glory. It receives more than one million visitors every year. Bath is enlisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In 18th century Bath became the fashion capital of England. The city’s theater was built during the same time and it is considered one of the most important theatrical scenes in the kingdom. The city now has five theaters and a vivid art and music program.
More signature buildings were built during the same period such as the residential buildings ‘Lansdown Crescent’, ‘Royal Crescent’ and ‘Circus’, as well as Pulteney Bridge designed with stores on both sides.
Bath Abbey is a famous venue hosting more than 20 concerts a year and 26 special pipe organ concerts. Another important concert hall is the former art deco cinema now known as The Forum with 1,700 seats.
Bath also offers its visitors an impressive number of galleries and museums among which Victoria Art Gallery, Museum of East Asian Art, Holburne Museum of Art, Bath Postal Museum, Fashion Museum, Jane Austen Centre, Herschel Museum of Astronomy and of course The Roman Baths Museum.
The Royal Crescent deserves a special mention. It is a marvelous C-shaped building considered to be one of the architectural masterpieces on the British Isles. The design is so peculiar that turned The Royal Crescent into a popular movie setting. The local museum of Bath is located in No. 1 Royal Crescent and No. 16 Royal Crescent was turned into a hotel.
The Roman Baths were once the most important public buildings in Ancient Rome. The Roman Baths in the city of Bath are one of the best preserved ancient baths. Their buildings now lay beneath the modern street level. The baths have four main areas – the ‘sacred’ pool, Roman Temples, Residential area and Roman Baths Museum.
