Hermitage Castle

Hermitage Castle is a grim fortress located in the Liddesdale Valley on the Anglo-Scottish border. They say there is hardly any darker and gloomier stronghold than Hermitage Castle.
It sits in the middle of a desolated field only 8 km from the border between England and Scotland and it used to play a key role during the long lasting battle for the control over the crucial borderline territories.
It is rightfully considered a haunted area given the fact it used to belong to de Soulis family who had a pretty sinister reputation. For instance William ‘the Wizard’ de Soulis was infamous for its interest in black magic.
Hermitage Castle was taken from de Soulis family in 1320 after an accusation in conspiracy against Robert the Bruce. Hence the castle was passed into the hands of the strongest family near the border at the time – the Black Douglas. Most of the exterior of Hermitage Castle left today is from their time. The next rulers of the fortress were the earls of Bothwell - the Hepburns.
Hermitage Castle was fully restored by James Scott, 1st Duke of Buccleuch and then granted to the Nation in 1930.
