One of the pivotal symbols of the British national identity is the Windsor Castle. It is the oldest and the largest occupied castle in Great Britain having 1000 rooms. This medieval fortress is one of the most recognizable emblem of the British monarchy. Windsor Castle was built by William the Conqueror in 11th century and it is still used by the reigning monarch of England. This castle together with Buckingham Palace is one of the two official Royal Family residences of Queen Elisabeth II.

She normally stays at Windsor Castle once in the beginning of the summer and once during the winter, usually for Christmas. Windsor Castle is open to the public, however only when The Royal Standard is not flown on its massive tower. When The Royal Standard is up this means the Queen is currently present at the royal residence and no visits are allowed. Windsor Castle has hosted royal weddings since 12th century until today and many of the kingdom’s monarchs are buried on its premises.

Windsor Castle is located near a town of the same name in the county of Berkshire. The castle was initially constructed as a fortification on the right bank of River Thames under the order of William the Conqueror in 11th century. Windsor together with a few other key fortresses along the river were used to protect the routes leading to the English capital.

King Henry II of England later ordered extensive improvements at Windsor constructing the main stone building and a few towers. Ever since Windsor Castle has been a Royal Residence. King Edward III of England destroyed what was previously built and erected Windsor Castle from scratch in 14th century. This is the architecture we know today.

The shortest street in the world named after Queen Charlotte is located next to the main gates of castle. It is barely a meter long.

The remarkable St George's Chapel stands in The Lower Ward of the castle. It was built between 1475 and 1525. The unique architecture of the chapel is in Perpendicular Gothic style and its interior is equally impressive.
