Liverpool

Liverpool is a city in Northwest England, located on the northern side of the Mersey Estuary. Liverpool is the main city in Merseyside County.
Two large cathedrals stand out among the landmarks of the city – one Catholic and one Anglican. The red sand-stone Anglican cathedral was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in a Neo-Gothic style and its construction continued from 1902 until 1978. It is the largest cathedral on the British Isles. Its tower is 110 meters high and provides a 360-degree view of the city and its surroundings.
The catholic cathedral also known as the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral was completed in 1967. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and it is considered to be larger than St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It has a modern round design. The locals also refer to the cathedral as ‘Paddy's Wigwam’.
There are three other spectacular buildings near Liverpool’s port, usually called Liverpool’s Three Graces. The first one is the Port of Liverpool Building built in 1907. The second one is the Cunard Building designed as an Italian castle and built in 1913. The third one is the Royal Liver Building which was headquarter of Royal Liver Company and has a copper statue of the Liver bird on top of it. The liver bird is a mythical creature and the symbol of Liverpool.
A proper city tour should include a visit at the Liverpool’s main station called Liverpool Lime Street. It was the largest building in the world at the time of its completion in 1876.
Liverpool is also the hometown of one of the most significant rock bands in the music history – The Beatles.
The city was selected as a joint European Capital of Culture for 2008.
