The city of Toledo is located in central Spain, 70 km south of Madrid, the capital of the province of Toledo and the Autonomous Community of Castilla-La Mancha. Toledo was founded in 540 BC by Jewish settlers, but in some historical facts it is also mentioned as a Phoenician settlement. When the Moors conquered Spain in the eighth century, Toledo fell under their rule. Within the Caliphate of Cordoba, the city of Toledo experienced a so-called golden age. This period is also known as La Convienza, where Jews, Christians and Muslims coexist.
Toledo later became the capital of Visigothic Spain. Some of Spain's famous artists, such as De la Vega and El Greco, were born in Toledo. The house of El Greco is a museum where you can see many of the masterpieces of the famous artist.
In the past, Toledo was famous for producing steel and making swords, and today it is a center for the production of knives and other steel products. After the relocation of the capital from Toledo to Madrid in 1561 the city gradually began to decline.
Toledo was known in the Middle Ages for its religious tolerance. Important monuments such as the Santa Maria la Blanca Synagogue, the El Transito Synagogue and the Cristo de la Luz Mosque can be seen in the city today. The city of Toledo is also a home to one of the largest and most brilliant Spanish cathedrals, built for nearly three centuries with 27 altars studded with precious stones, gold and ivory in brilliant workmanship. It is remarkable for its combination of light and baroque ornaments.
Countless small shops with valuables, swords and swords made of famous Toledo steel can be found in the narrow streets of Toledo. In the Toledo cafes you should also try the local delicacies, especially the delicious almond marzipan. Toledo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the wealth of cultural and historical monuments that the city has preserved as the former capital of the Spanish Empire and as a place where Christian, Jewish and Moorish culture coexist.
