Pontevedra, Spain
Pontevedra is a famous historical city, culturally rich and has a significant number of architectural landmarks that are worth seeing.
Pontevedra is one of the most attractive towns in Galicia. The story goes that the city was founded by Tevkar, a Greek warrior who took part in the Trojan War, and has preserved to this day its unique medieval center, along with large and small popular squares.
Although not on the same scale as La Coruna or Santiago de Compostela, Pontevedra has a satisfactory share of historic buildings, churches, museums and monuments. To the west, in the old fishing quarter, rises the Basilica of Santa Maria la Mayor, built by the Guild of Sailors, decorated with bas-reliefs of biblical scenes. The magnificent Museo Provincial de Pontevedra, located in five different buildings, is not inferior in majesty. Magnificent Celtic ornaments from 800-700 BC, as well as a collection of Renaissance and medieval paintings by Spanish, Italian and Flemish artists are housed in the 18th-century house of Castro Monteagudo.
The journey into the world of cultural heritage of the Spanish Pontevedra continues with a visit to the house of Garcia Flores, where you can see religious sculptures and reconstructions of interiors. Collections of Gaelic and Spanish art from the XIX-XX centuries are other valuables worth seeing when visiting Pontevedra.
The impressive Gothic remains of the monastery of Santo Domingo, as well as the Benedictine Monasterio de Poio - a model of Galician classicism, are also a sign of the city's former prosperity.
But the irresistible charm of Pontevedra is not only due to its many old buildings of local granite. The incredible atmosphere of the city is complemented by the small and large attractive squares, dotted with cafes and bars around them. Such are the Praça de Teucro and the Praça de Verdura, which are still used as traditional specialty markets, as well as the town square of Alameda de Pontevedra with its amazing, strewn with leaves, garden and popular walking spot.
Pontevedra is a city with rich charm, energy and lively atmosphere, with nightlife from which the old town really comes to life and all the bars are full of people. This is just a small addition to what makes it more and more famous and popular from a tourist point of view.
