Rock of Gibraltar, Great Britain
The Rock of Gibraltar is one of the most famous in the world. It rises 426 metres above sea level above a narrow strip of sea that separates Europe from North Africa - the Strait of Gibraltar. In reality, the Rock of Gibraltar is a monolithic limestone promontory connected to Spain by a narrow sandy peninsula.
Its location is of great strategic importance. It was ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713.
An interesting fact about the Rock of Gibraltar is that its western half is home to Europe's only wild monkeys, some 250 Barbary macaques.
