Canakkale
For centuries, Canakkale has been the guardian of the Dardanelles - the narrow straits which separate Europe from Asia and connect the Aegean Sea with the Sea of Marmara. Battles have been fought for this strategic place since the days of the Trojan War. During the First World War Great Britain and France tried to break into the fortifications of Canakkale. The goal is to conquer Istanbul and to establish control over the entire waterway from the Aegean Sea to the Black Sea.
After nine months of fierce battle which claimed more than 50,000 lives from the confederates and many from the Turks, the allies conceded defeat. The victory was due to the good strategy of lieutenant colonel Mustafa Kemal - later called Ataturk. Today Canakkale is an agricultural center and garrison town that serves as the entrance to the historical Gallipoli.
