Sinop has been known since ancient times as Sinope and is the oldest city on the Black Sea coast. It is believed that Sinop has been founded by the Amazon queen Zinova. Interesting here is the collection of Greek Eastern Orthodox icons exhibited in the City Museum. In the courtyard of the City Museum is the Temple of Serapis from the IIth century BC. There is also the birthplace of the cynical philosopher Diogenes. Alaaddin Cami - the mosque named after the prominent Seljuk sultan was built in 1214. Its magnificent mihrab (prayer niche) is exhibited in the Istanbul Moulay of Islamic Art.
