The ship Discovery
The RRS (Royal Research Ship) ‘Discovery’ is an interesting Scottish maritime heritage that can be seen on River Tay, placed in a custom-built dock in Dundee. Her significance is due to the fact that Captain Scott reached Antarctica with her. RRS ‘Discovery’ is the last wooden three-masted ship built on the British Islands. It was built upon request of the Royal Geographical Society.
RRS ‘Discovery’ was constructed on the docks of Dundee where she returned in 1986 to be restored to her original condition from the time when Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his 37-member crew made their expedition. They reached Antarctica in 1902.
RRS ‘Discovery’ was equipped with a coal engine, had a massive wooden hull and had length of 52 meters. Her displacement tonnage was 1620 tons.
