Sibenik, Croatia
In the northern part of Dalmatia, right at the mouth of the river Krka is Sibenik. The town emerged in the 11th century as one of the first Slavic settlements in these places.
During different periods the city was under different rule. From 1412 to 1797, Sibenik was part of the Venetian Republic for the longest time. The town flourished during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
Sights in Sibenik: The Cathedral of St. Jacob, one of the most beautiful in Dalmatia, built in the period 1431-1536, built of marble and stone, the Rector's Palace (Prince's Palace), the church of St. John the Baptist from the 16th century and the Orthodox Church of St. Spas at the 14th century, famous for its beautiful iconostasis.
