Nice is a city on the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur). It is believed to have been founded by the Greeks around 350 BC under the name of Nicea. In the 11th century Nice joined the Principality of Provence, in the 14th century Savoy, in the early 19th century Piedmont and Sardinia .It finally became part of today's France in 1860. Nice hosts an annual carnival from 13 to 25 February, which is visited by about 1.2 million tourists each year. The first record of the carnival is from 1294, when the Conte Charles d'Anjou spent "joyous days" in Nice. The modern celebration dates back to February 23, 1873, when His Majesty King Carnival I entered the city.
There are 18 museums and galleries in Nice - museums of Matisse, Marc Chagall, Renoir, Auguste Rodin and others. More in Nice of interest to see are the 17th century Cathedral with its unusual bell tower, the Italian-style Lascaris Palace, etc.
