Aix-en-Provence, France
The university town of Aix-en-Provence (Aix-en-Provence) is a town in southeastern France, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is located about 30 km north of Marseille. It is famous for its medieval castles.
Aix-en-Provence has one wide street worth walking along, Mirabeau, planted with double rows of trees, bordered by beautiful houses and decorated with fountains, which follows the line of the old town and divides it into two parts. The new town of Aix-en-Provence spreads out in the south-west, while the old one, with its wide and unusual streets and old buildings dating from the 16th-18th centuries, lies in the north.
One of the interesting sights of Aix-en-Provence is the Deux Garcons brewery. Another interesting landmark is the Cathedral of St. Spas, which was built on the site of a former Roman forum, combines various styles from the 5th to the 17th centuries, the most interesting being an ornate Gothic portal with doors carved from walnut.
Aix-en-Provence is often referred to by another name, the city of a thousand fountains. This is due to the fact that it has so many fountains and each one has a different history and from a different time. Among the most notable is the 17th century Fountain of the Four Dolphins.
What gives Aix-en-Provence extra charm and makes it worth visiting are the two remarkable musical events once a year. One is the Aix-en-Provence Opera Festival, which was first held in 1948. The other event is the Musique dans la Rue classical and jazz music festival, which takes place every year in June and lasts for a week.
