The Black Sea coast
The Black Sea coast protects some of the wildest and most secluded areas of Turkey. When Greek colonists first settled in the area in the 8th century BC, the inland was ruled by the Persian feudal aristocracy. In 301 BC, after the War of the Succession of Alexander the Great, the eighty-year-old Mithridates II Crestes (Founder) established a new dynasty in the Amazea, today's Amaziah.
In 63 BC Julius Caesar annexed the kingdom of Mithridates VI to the Roman Empire. During the Ottoman era, the importance of sea lanes made the Black Sea coast a contested region between Russia and Turkey. The War of Independence finally settled this problem.
