Semmering is a town in the district of Neunkirchen in the state of Niederösterreich, which owes its heyday to the construction and opening of the railway from Vienna in 1854.

Construction of the line began in 1841 when the then Minister of State, Karl Friedrich Kübeck, commissioned a train line to Trieste. Today, the most beautiful route from Vienna to the south of Austria leads along the railway in the region of the "Magic Peaks" at Semering. Under the direction of the Venetian civil engineer Carlo di Chega, the train line was laid in the pass between 1848 and 1854.

The construction of this railway line at Semering was impressive even then as it was a harmonious combination of technology and nature and made its mark then and now on this unique cultural landscape. Even today, the region of Semering-Rax-Schneeberg ranks among the classic holiday destinations in Europe.

In this oldest preserved cog railway in the world, the train passes through 16 viaducts and 14 tunnels that were dug and made by hand. This line is a true work of urban engineering. For this reason, the legendary line is depicted as a motif on many coins and medals, the most interesting being a 25 euro coin put into circulation to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Zemering railway. It is worth visiting the railway museum in Mürzuschlag, where the history of the line and its innovations can be traced.
