Domažlice, Czech Republic
The main town of the Hodsko region is Domažlice. Among its preserved landmarks are the customs house once controlled by the hikers, the castle used as the administrative centre, and the courthouse. Bohemia's towns have beautiful squares with arches, but this one is among the most charming and well-preserved. The town of Domažlice itself is set around its central square, Namnesti Miru, around which are perched huge houses with gables and galleries.
At one end of the square is the "Low Gate" with its decorative turrets, at the other is the 18th century Augustinian Church, and the centre of the square is taken up by the 1747 Church of the Nativity, with its lavish altarpiece and designed by Kilian Ignaz Dintzenhofer. The 200 steps of the circular medieval watchtower built into it lead up to a spot from which one enjoys a beautiful view over the town.
Opposite the Augustinian monastery is a street that leads to the remains of another medieval monument, the round tower of the "Hod Castle". In the past, it was the seat of the Domažlice town court, and today it is a museum preserving the town's history, where typical Hodxo folklore objects are exhibited. As the main town of Hodsko, Domažlice proudly preserves its folklore traditions, preserved by the German influence of the Habsburgs. However, citizens in typical Chodsko attire can only be seen at Sunday church services and during the folk festival. Then the sounds of bagpipes are heard around Domažlice and traditional costumes are worn. The men dress in yellow trousers, white socks and wide-brimmed hats, while the women wear ornate waistcoats and aprons. This is the place to mention another cultural gem of Domažlice, the 'Museum Inđiha Inđiha', which displays Khoja folklore, art and cultural artefacts.
As a typical town that has preserved its history and traditions, Domažlice has allocated a place to place a reconstruction of a typical village map. A collection of ceramics and clothing is exhibited there. Ceramics in the typical Chod style are still produced in the local cooperative.
