Bilabo, Spain
Bilbao is the capital of the Basque Country. The city was founded on June 15, 1300 by the Basque ruler Don Diego Lopez V de Aro, and its inhabitants settled on the banks of the Nervion and Ibaisabal rivers, at their confluence with the Basque Gulf. Apart from the local population, the shores are home to many enterprises and factories, which during the industrial revolution contributed a lot to the prosperity of the region.
In the past, the city was known as a mining town due to its large deposits of iron. Today, these facts, as well as Basque wool, ore and steel production, make Bilbao the largest and most important city in the Basque country, a major port and industrial and economic center in the northern Iberian Peninsula. In 2007, 40 million tons of cargo and over 170,000 passengers passed through it.
Tourism in Bilabo is the other pillar of its economy, relying heavily on the services sector. Architectural and historical landmarks contribute to the cultural renaissance and tourist boom of the city.
The strongest evidence of this is the transformation of the old shipyard and docks Abandoira into a new cultural center with a three-kilometer sculpture alley, the Guggenheim Museum, opened in 1997 and a stunning pedestrian bridge, which significantly changes the appearance of the city.
Walking through the narrow winding streets of Casco Viejo or the Old Town, a pedestrian area with many tapas bars, where the Cathedral of Bilbao is located, one feels how one is charged with new life. For those who want to learn more about the culture and economy of the Basque Country, the Museo Banco Museum is open, and for good coffee and relaxation, the lively Plaza Nueva offers many cafes and shops.
Those in need of adrenaline can board a cable car and head to the adventure venues at Archanda Amusement Park. The financial institutions and chic shops of Bilbao can be seen at their center in the magnificent 19th-century quarter. Bilbao is also increasing its fame with its representative football team Athletic Bilbao, which is a longtime member of the Spanish Primera Division.
The interesting facts about Bilbao are not limited to its economic and tourist positions in the world. Its interesting relief feature, surrounded by two small mountain ranges called Pagasarri and Artxanda, attracts countless visitors to "El botxo" or "The hole".
