Aarhus (Aarhus) is a city in Central Denmark, the administrative center of the region of the same name. Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark after the capital Copenhagen, located on the east coast of the Jutland peninsula. Since 951, Aarhus has been the seat of a bishopric, and the city's cathedral, dating from the 13th century, is the largest church in Denmark. Today, the city is the cultural center of Denmark, a university town and the country's second most important port. The economic growth of the city of Aarhus is based on the means of communication, food and textile industries, as well as mechanical engineering.
In the history of today's Aarhus, it is recorded that in the past, Aarhus was originally founded in the 10th century as a Viking settlement. The city experienced rapid growth and by 948 it was already the seat of a bishopric. The prosperity of the city temporarily stopped at the end of the Middle Ages, but thanks to the construction of railways in the 19th century, Aarhus resumed its prosperity.
Aarhus has a well-preserved historic center, good museums and wonderful old churches. The main attraction of the city is the Old Town. Also known as Den-Gamle-Bu, this impressive part of the city is a delightful open-air museum, where the beauty of 75 restored buildings, collected from all over Denmark, reigns supreme.
Aarhus is famous for the cathedral church "St. Kliment", because besides being impressive, it is also the largest church in the country.
Among the good museums of the city, for example, the Art Museum stands out. It is dedicated to Danish art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Its new building, which was built in the period 1938-1942, is a fine example of modern Danish architecture. Not to be missed is the Museum of Prehistory, which is astonishing for its collection of prehistoric artefacts, including a human skeleton preserved for two millennia in the bathystic area not far from the city, and discovered in 1952.
Aarhus dares to claim to be the city with the richest and most diverse cultural life in Jutland today. Evidence of this, for example, is one of the biggest attractions in this regard - the Concert Hall. Another proof is the annual festival held on the first Sunday of September in Aarhus – one of the biggest cultural events in Europe.
