Helsinki has a population of 579,016 and is the capital and largest city in Finland. It is located on the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland in the province of Southern Finland.

One of Helsinki's biggest attractions is the island fortress of Suomenlinna. The fortress was built by the Swedes in the 17th century on six islands. Currently, there are still military and barracks on Suomenlinna Island. It is one of the most visited places in Helsinki. In 1991 it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every year in August there is a fireworks competition on Suomenlinna Island. There are two churches in Helsinki that are worth seeing. One is the Cathedral of the Assumption, built in the Russian style and is the largest of its kind in the Nordic countries. The second church is dug into a rock (Tempeliaukio). Only the dome of the church is above ground.

In Helsinki, the Presidential Palace, Senate Square with the Lutheran Cathedral, the Parliament, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House are also worth seeing. Near Helsinki is the museum city of Porvoo with all wooden buildings coloured in different colors.
