Porto Alegre, Brazil
Porto Alegre is one of the largest cities and the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. The city was founded in 1742 by Portuguese colonizers. Its first name was Porto de Viamau. In the 19th century many emigrants from Germany, Poland and Italy settled here.
Now its population is 1.5 million. Porto Alegre is now one of the main administrative and financial centers in Brazil.
