Belo Horizonte translated from Portuguese means "Nice horizon". The city is the capital of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. The city of Belo Horizonte is surrounded by the Serra do Cural Mountains and is located 716 km from the capital of Brazil, Brasilia. It was designed and built as the state capital in 1897 and has a population of about 2.4 million. Thus, the city ranks sixth in the country. According to a ranking by a United Nations organization, Belo Horizonte has the best quality of life in Latin America and ranks 45th among the 100 best cities in the world.
There are a number of museums in Belo Horizonte: the Pambula Museum of Art, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, and the Natural History Museum. Of interest is the monument-architectural ensemble of Pamplona. The town hosts events of great popularity, such as the International Theatre Festival, the Belo Horizonte International Short Film Festival and the International Literary Meeting in Portuguese.
