Snagov Monastery, Romania
The Snagov Monastery was built on an islet on Lake Snagov located about 40 km north of Bucharest. The first references to the Snagov Monastery are in the Palace Charter of 1408, issued during the reign of the Wallachian Voivode Mircho Stari. The church of the monastery was built during the reign of Prince Niago Besarab at the beginning of the 16th century, later improvements were made in 1688. A fortress wall and an observation tower acting as a bell tower were built around the monastery.
According to legends, the decapitated body of Vlad III Cepes - Dracula, who died in battle in 1476, is buried here.
The Snagov Palace was used as a residence by dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and houses a collection of gifts and paintings.
