The High Tatras in Slovakia are also called the Little Alps of Central Europe. They are located in the eastern part of the High Tatras National Park and cover 750 sq km on the border between Slovakia and Poland. The periodic glaciations of the area over thousands of years have shaped a remarkable granite landscape with deep valleys, beautiful mountain lakes, waterfalls and exciting 1,000-metre high rock walls. The climate of the Tatras is unique - from -40 degrees in winter, to +33 degrees in summer. The alpine character of the Tatras and their accessibility make them an ideal place for skiing, hiking and mountaineering.

Gerlachovsky Shield is the highest peak, but there are no trails to it and the climb to the top is only with a guide.
