Bardala Domica Caves (Baradla Aggtelek Cave), Hungary
The Bardala Domica Caves (Baradla Aggtelek Cave) in Hungary are one of the most beautiful cave systems in Central Europe. They are part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site of Central Europe with over 700 caves.
According to archaeological data, these caves were inhabited by primitive people. The cave was mentioned as early as 1549 and in 1794 two kilometres of their galleries were marked on the world's first cave map. Bardala and Domitsa are connected by the underground river Styx.
The Bardala Domica Caves are located on 3 levels and were formed 2 million years ago. The water that penetrated the limestone rock layers has created a fabulous world of halls and galleries, decorated with astonishingly beautiful stalagmite forests and fantastic colourful rock pendants of all kinds of shapes. The longest stalagmite in the world is in these caves - 32.7 m.
