Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine. It is located in the eastern part of the country near the border with Russia.

Kharkiv was founded in the 17th century, and in the early years of the Soviet Union it was the capital of the Ukrainian Republic. The city experienced great destruction during the Second World War, when it passed from Russian to German hands several times. After the war, the city was rebuilt and, with its 30 universities, continues to be a major cultural and educational center.

One of Kharkiv's biggest attractions is Freedom Square, the second largest square in the world.

In 2012, Kharkiv hosted matches from the European Football Championship.
