El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve is located in the middle of the Lower Californian Peninsula, between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California, and covers 450 km of coastline. It is Mexico's largest reserve. The climate is semi-desert, so interesting cacti are found. Of the animal species there are antelope, desert wild sheep, black-tailed deer and coyotes. This land also has a rich ancient culture. Traces of human activity from 11,000 years ago can be seen throughout the caves of El Vizcaino. But the greatest treasure of the El Vizcaino Reserve is its protected areas for whales. They travel over 8,000 km to come here to give birth to their young. The whales understand that they are safe here, so they can be safely observed from boat or ships. You can't do that anywhere in the world - get that close to giant mammals.
