Lake Ohrid is the oldest lake in Europe. It is 3 million years old and so deep (288 m) that it survived the ice age. Some of the fish in Lake Ohrid are found nowhere else in the world, such as the summer trout. The flesh of this fish is red in winter and white in summer and has therefore been a favourite delicacy since Roman times.

Lake Ohrid is a mountain lake located at 693 m above sea level between Albania and Macedonia. Its waters are crystal clear. The vegetation in the Macedonian National Park is densely forested and bears, wolves and wild boar roam there. And the rocky shores and small coves of Lake Ohrid are suitable for the breeding of many birds. On the shores of the lake is the town of Ohrid, which at the time of Tsar Samuel was the capital of the Bulgarian kingdom.
