St. Peter's Square was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in the 17th century. St Peter's Basilica rises majestically above it. The square was meant to hold 400,000 people at a time. On Sundays when in Rome, the Pope appeared at the window of his office on the third floor of the Palazzo Vaticano, to the right of the basilica, to bless the crowd in the square.
