Kathmandu is located in a high valley surrounded by terraced hills. The city is the gateway to the Himalayas. It has been the capital of Nepal since 1769 and is the largest city in the country. It has about 730 thousand people. Kathmandu controlled for many years the most important caravan route between Tibet and India.

The city is the starting point for visiting the jungles of Chitwan and other national parks inhabited by rhinos, tigers, toucans and elephants. Twin-engine planes take off from Kathmandu to Lukla - the closest airport to Everest and the starting point for its conquest - Namche Bazar.

There are four UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu. These are: "Durbar" square with the pagodas and the old Hanuman Dhoka palace temple complex; the Swayambhu Baudhanath Buddhist stupas; the Pashupati Hindu temple.

It is interesting for Nepal that it has a living goddess - Kumari Devi. This is a young girl who is chosen to meet 32 physical criteria, from the shape of her teeth to the length of her toes. The chosen girl lives in Kumari Bahal, near Durbar Square. Kathmandu became popular in the 1960s as a popular stop for hippies.

Thamel area is very attractive for tourists. Here are the pubs where the legendary Beatles and Yoko Ona stayed, Bob Dylan, the conqueror of Everest-Edmund Hillary.
