Namib, Namibia

The Namib is the oldest desert in the world. It stretches 1600 km along the Atlantic coast of South Africa and is part of the Namib Naukluft Nature Park. It is one of the driest places on the planet. The highest dune in the world is located here - 380 m. In the Namib Desert there are frequent fogs, resulting from the meeting of the dry and hot desert air with cold air masses from the ocean. It is tantamount to life, for the few animals here, as it gives them much-valued moisture in this extremely dry region. Lizards, desert vipers, and of birds, desert wrens and ostriches are found here.
Watching the sunrise or sunset from the top of a dune is an extraordinary experience - as the light changes the dunes take on different colors. The best time to visit is from October to March, the nearest town is Windhoek, 480 km away.
