The Great Western Sand Desert is one of the world's largest sand dune systems. It is located in Algeria. The Great Eastern Sand Desert is also located here. Because they are located in areas of low elevation, they are thought to have once been the bottoms of shallow seas or lakes. The lovely oasis towns of El Golea, Beni Abes and Tarhit can be the starting point for a short journey inland into the desert with its seemingly endless rows of islet-shaped golden dunes one behind the other.
