Oscar Wilde House Museum, Dublin
The Oscar Wilde House Museum, which is located in the Irish city of Dublin, is located on one of the Georgian-style squares and was where the artist and his family lived in the period 1855-1876.
Oscar Wilde was born in a house located on Westland Street, but the artist claimed to have been born in the beautiful Georgian Merrion Square. The family, consisting of his older brother Willie, his father Sir William Wilde, a famous surgeon and ear and eye specialist, and his mother Lady Jane Wilde, a poet, Irish leader and manager of a fashionable literary salon, moved into a house in Merrion Square in 1855, which is now a museum in honor of Oscar Wilde.
Oscar's mother was the dominant figure in this prosperous family, and her two sons fiercely competed for her love. The house and the Wilde family were looked after by six servants, a German, a French and a Swiss governess. The family continued to live in what is now the Oscar Wilde House Museum until 1876.
In 1994, this house passed under the management of the American College in Dublin, which is actually credited with restoring it today and turning it into an Oscar Wilde museum. In Merrion Square, where Wilde's house is located, there is even a monument to the artist since 1997.
