Cocos Island is an uninhabited island of 24 square kilometers located in the eastern Pacific Ocean, 550 kilometers off the coast of Costa Rica. Dangerous cliffs rise 600 m vertically upwards and descend that much further underwater. Only a few small coves are convenient for accosting. The island was discovered in 1526 and soon became famous as a place where pirates hid their booty. Supposedly, the treasure from the Mary Deere was buried here by Captain Thompson in 1821. Since then many expeditions have tried to find it, and even now there are people who believe they will find it in one of the underwater caves or in the jungle. Today, Cocos Island is famous for its marine inhabitants - found from the tiniest fish to huge whale sharks. Its waters have been declared a marine reserve. Diving here is an unforgettable experience. The best time for diving is from March to December.
