Georgia

Georgia is located between Europe and Asia. The northern part of the country is occupied by the highest European mountain the Caucasus. To the west, on the Black Sea coast, is located the low Colchis valley. Heavily marshy in the past, today it is the most fertile arable land in Georgia. Citrus fruits, the famous Georgian tea, vineyards and tobacco are grown here.
Georgia is rich in water. In the higher parts of the Caucasus there are eternal snow and glaciers. The country is abundant in forests – mixed and coniferous, maple bushes, etc.
Georgia is located on an important crossroads between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, between Europe and Asia. For thousands of years important commercial roads have crossed it. The Georgian lands have been under Arab, Persian, Byzantine and Mongolian rule.
The number of the different ethnic groups here exceeds 100. The relations between them are complex and conflicts often arise. This hampers the development of the economy.
To improve the standard of living, Georgia relies on transport connections and tourism.
The ancient state of Iberia and Colchis were established on the territory of Georgia in 6th c. BC. According to the ancient Greek mythology the Argonauts went to Colchis to take the golden fleece.
