The Northern Lights in Iceland
The Northern Lights are an impressive luminous phenomenon in nature, representing flickering streams of multicolored lights in the night sky. The Northern Lights occur when electrified solar wind particles travelling at 1200 km/s are caught by the Earth's magnetic field. The particles are attracted by the Earth's poles entering the Earth's ionosphere; they interact with gases in our atmosphere. This produces so-called photons - light particles that glow green, red, blue and violet. As a result, the Northern Lights appear in the sky. To observe this wondrous natural phenomenon in Iceland, autumn is the best time.
