Caracas is located in a narrow mountain valley near the Caribbean Sea in the north of the country. It is separated from the coast by a mountain range. It is the capital of Venezuela, South America. The city was founded in 1567 by the Spanish captain Diego de Lozada. It now has a population of 3.2 million.

During the 20th century Caracas modernized and became one of the main economic centers of South America, thanks to oil. On the other hand, the city became overpopulated and a stark contrast between rich and poor emerged.

In the center of the city is the monument to the national hero Simon Bolivar, who was born in Caracas. Other important buildings are located here, such as the Mira Flores Palace, or the residence of the President of the Republic; the Palace of Justice, etc. In the immediate vicinity are the Pantheon, the National Library and the Museum of Fine Arts.

A must-see is the Caracas Cathedral, which has interesting architecture and an exquisite sculptural figure at the top of the tower. The parks, gardens and squares of the city occupy an important place. The El Avila National Park and the magnificent colonial-style building of the Museo del Arte Colonial are some of the interesting things to see here.
