Black River Gorges National Park is located on the small island of Mauritius. It was established in 1994 and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2006 to preserve the remnants of Mauritius' ancient forests and its endemic flora and fauna.

The park includes beautiful meadows, low mountain forests, creeks, waterfalls and fantastic views across the gorges, all the way to the ocean shores. Here can be seen the extraordinary bois de nat tree with the profile of an open umbrella. Here also grow the trees casuarina, colophane, tatamaka, tambalacoc and ebony. The most famous species of the 163 endemic plants is the trochee flower, which has become an emblem of the island.

Of the animals, the Mauritian kerkenez, the pink pigeon and the Mauritian echo parrot, white-tailed faetons, yellow-eyed canaries and Mauritian bulbuls are found. Among the sights one can visit the Chamarel waterfall, the Supjak seaside resort, the Kazela bird sanctuary. The boat trip to O'Cerf Island is something unique. The best time to visit is between May and December and the nearest town is Kurpipe, 6 km away.
