Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles
Aldabra Atoll is one of the largest atolls in the world, located in the western Indian Ocean - the Seychelles. It consists of four limestone reef islands rising above the water, enclosing a lagoon of 224 square kilometers. The Aldabra Atoll is a true wonder of nature for scientists and was declared a Natural and World Heritage Monument by UNESCO in 1982.
At low tide the water level in the lagoon drops 2-3 m, and then the same huge masses of water are back again through the narrow reef passages and the three wider channels through which they came out. Thousands of frigate and red-footed boobies nest here. Of interest is the only non-flying bird found on the Indian Ocean islands, called - Aldabra Carp.
The animal world here is represented by two endangered species of sea turtles, of which 100,000 specimens live here. Aldabra Atoll is uninhabited today, except for the staff of the small research station. The nearest town is Victoria on the island of Mahe, 1200 km away.
