Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is located in Southwestern Kenya, near the border with Tanzania. Lions and cheetahs, baboons, zebras, spotted hyenas, water buffaloes, antelopes, Rothschild's and common giraffes, wild bulls, Thomson's and Grant's gazelles and various species of antelope are found in its fields and acacia groves. Elephants can also be seen here, and the Mara River provides water for hippos, as well as shelter for leopards and crocodiles. The black rhinoceros can be found here, albeit rarely. More than 450 species of birds live in the "Maasai Mara" reserve.
The reserve hosts one of nature's most spectacular shows – the annual migration of 1,200,000 wildebeest, more than 350,000 Thomson's gazelles and over 190,000 zebras. This happens from June to September. The hot air balloon ride on the reserve is interesting. The nearest town to the Masai Mara is Narok.
