Komodo National Park was established in 1980 to protect the eponymous ancient barred lizards. It has been declared a World Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO. In the waters around the islands there are many species of fish, whales, dolphins, sea turtles. On the reefs there are many corals. But the biggest attraction here are the komodo barnacles. Lizard activity is greatest in the morning or late afternoon. At midday, when it is hottest, they bury themselves to cool off. The varans get about 3 m long and are good swimmers. The best time to visit is from April to October and the nearest town is Labuanbajo, 35 km away. Tourists should know not to dress in red clothes.
