Mount Kinabalu, Indonesia
Mount Kinabalu is the highest in Southeast Asia. It is located in the highest mountain between the Himalayas and Indonesia. The first ascent was by Sir Hugh Lowe (British Secretary for Colonial Affairs), in 1851. Today, tourists from all over the world climb Mount Kinabalu. It is reached in stages, usually in 2 days. There are places to stay overnight on the way. It is good to reach the top to watch the sunrise. The view is worth the tiring climb.
The insectivorous plants on the way up the mountain are interesting. Because of the diverse flora of the area, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Southeast Asian Centre of Plant Diversity. The driest weather here is from February to April, but here in the tropics, heavy rain can fall at any time. The nearest town is Kota Kinabalu, 88 km away.
