Black Hills, South Dakota (USA)

The Black Hills located in South Dakota are so named because of the dark color of the pines with which they are covered. The great attraction of this region is Mount Rushmore. On its high granite wall are modeled the 18-metre faces of the four most famous American presidents. Work is underway to create another statue, of the legendary Sioux chief Crazy Horse, who defeated General Custer's troops in 1876. The statue will be the largest monument on earth at 173 meters high and 197 meters long.
